Shambhala Company Limited was established in the year 1993, soon after Myanmar's embracing to the market oriented economy. It started as a general trading business company by importing and distributing pharmaceutical products, electric goods, building materials, beverages, cigarettes, perfumes and cosmetic products. The Company has two duty free shops, one in Kawthaung and the other is at the Mandalay International Airport.
In addition to this, the Company also extended its scope of business to tourism with the cooperation of
Shambhala Tours Company Limited. The Company's main objective is to focus on marine eco-tourism and development of resorts at the Myeik (Mergui) Archipelago, Andaman Sea, Myanmar. The Company then endeavored to expose Salone (Sea Gypsy) also called Moken by Thais and Malays to the world. For centuries these sea faring Salones
(Sea Gypsy/ Moken) have lived in the Myeik Archipelago region. The Company was a major contributor and a leading participant in the Salone Festival, the first festival for the Salones
(Sea Gypsy/ Moken) in the history of Myanmar, was held at the Bo Cho Island from February 14-17, 2004, and was attended by many local and international tourists.
The Company instituted the Myanmar Dolphin Project at the Salone Island, in the Myeik Archipelago. The primary purpose of the project is intended specially to protect and preserve Myanmar dolphins in the Andaman Sea, survey and discover new species of dolphins, to share knowledge and interchange with other countries. The interactive part of the program, especially "Swim with the Dolphins Program", attracted many international tourists and researchers to the Myeik Archipelago.
The Company has also done large-scale shrimp farming at Pathein (Bassein), IrrawaddyDivision in the delta area of southern Myanmar.
The Company did construction works of Inya Lake Condominium at 6 ½ Mile, Yangon. Presently, it is developing resorts and restaurants at the Salone Island (Pulo Besin), Myinn Khwar Island (Horse Shoe Island), Myauk Ni Island (North Phipps), Phi Lar Island (Great Swintons) and Wa Ale Island (near Lampi Island) in the Myeik Archipelago.
Maw Htoon & Partners Company Limited is an international law firm. This firm, which deals in legal matters is also a company under the Shambhala Group. MHP has many local and international clients. It is one of the major international law firms in Myanmar. It does litigations involving commercial laws, as well as legal consultation matters, and handles notary works.
The Company has ample governmental contacts and has formed strategic alliances with other reputable companies for its future plans and projects. Presently, it is running with a work force of 50 persons under the skillful and effective management guidance to achieve its intended goals.
U YE HTOON, CHAIRMAN
U Ye Htoon is the eldest son of the late U Chan Htoon, former Attorney General.
U Chan Htoon was also the Associate Justice of the Supreme Court and the architect of the first constitution of Burma (Myanmar). U Ye Htoon is a graduate of the Bucknell University, Pennsylvania, USA and received a postgraduate Bachelor of Law degree from the Rangoon (Yangon) University, Union of Myanmar.
He is also the son-in-law of the eminent lawyer and politician Dr. Ba Maw, who was the first Prime Minister and the Head of State of Burma (Myanmar). U Ye Htoon himself is a prominent lawyer and a successful entreprenuer. He was a pioneer in bringing digital switching telephone exchanges to Myanmar. He has amassed a vast experience with the country's economic system and he is a business consultant to many international companies. He is also Chairman of Maw Htoon & Partners Co., Ltd., Shambhala Tours Co., Ltd., Shambhala Financial Services, and the Myanmar Thai Gypsum Co., Ltd.
DR. PHONE WIN, MANAGING DIRECTOR
Dr. Phone Win is the son of the late Major Khin Maung Htun. He received a medical degree from the Institue of Medicine 1, Yangon. Although he is a physician, he prefers business to medicine and especially to do the economic developments for Myanmar. Young, initiative and energetic, he has made strenuous efforts to widen the scope of the country's tourism. He has excellent contacts with governmental authorities and could approach higher levels for businesses that would be beneficial to the country. He has visited many foreign countries and has wide international business knowledge. Due to his earnest efforts, Shambhala Company Limited is recognized as one of the leading companies of Myanmar. His endeavors to expose the near extinct ethnic race of Salones, also called Mokens by Thais and Malays, to the world are unique and laudable.
DAW YUZA MAW HTOON, DIRECTOR
She is a graduate from the Rangoon (Yangon) Art & Science University. As the sole proprietor of Thu Ri Ya Overseas Trade Services, she has had exceptional business experience from the days of the socialist economy. In those days, the Trade Services primarily exported bird-nests and wooden sculptures. She does works as a contractor in building houses and condominiums in Yangon. She has been the Financial Director of the Shambhala Company Limited since its inception.
